Packing up delicate items, such as glassware, picture frames, or heirlooms, can feel nerve-wracking, and for good reason. When you’re storing things you care about, you want to know they’re protected and packed the right way.
At Arborstone Storage, we’ve seen everything from priceless collectibles to grandma’s china set packed into storage units. Whether you’re storing things short-term or long-term, a little extra care with fragile items goes a long way. Here are our best tips to help you pack them safely and confidently.
Use the Right Boxes
Start with sturdy, high-quality boxes, not the worn-out ones from your last Amazon order. Double-walled boxes or specialty boxes (like dish or glassware boxes) give you more protection and structure, especially if you’re stacking.
Pro tip: Don’t overpack! Heavy boxes are harder to carry and more likely to break or crush things inside.
Wrap Everything Properly
Bubble wrap is your best friend here. Wrap each item individually, especially plates, glasses, and ceramics. If you’re packing dishes, place them vertically (like records) rather than stacking them flat; it helps prevent pressure cracks.
No bubble wrap? Use packing paper, dish towels, socks, or soft clothing as padding.
Fill the Gaps
Empty space inside a box is what causes items to shift and break. Once everything is wrapped and packed, fill any remaining gaps with crumpled paper, foam peanuts, or towels. You want things to stay snug and still.
Label Every Box (And Be Specific)
Labeling “fragile” on all sides of the box is important, especially if someone else might be helping you move. It’s also smart to write what’s inside, like “fragile – wine glasses” or “fragile – photo frames.” That way, you know what to handle with care later on.
Stack with Care
When placing boxes in your storage unit, never stack heavy boxes on top of fragile ones. Keep breakables on top or on their own shelf if possible. Use furniture, totes, or soft items like pillows as natural barriers.
If you’re storing long-term, keep fragile boxes off the floor; just in case of moisture, a pallet or plastic bin underneath can help.
