So, you’ve decided to rent a storage unit – great choice! Whether you’re in the middle of a move, clearing out clutter, or just need a little more breathing room, self-storage can make life a lot easier. But before you start hauling boxes over, a little planning goes a long way.
At Arborstone Storage, we’ve helped many people navigate the storage process. And we’ve learned that prepping ahead of time makes move-in day way less stressful. Here’s a simple checklist to help you get ready.
1. Pick the Right Unit Size
First things first: make sure you’re renting the right amount of space. You don’t want to cram everything into a unit that’s too small or overpay for space you’re not using.
Think about what you’re storing, and use our online size guide if you need help. You can also call or stop by; our team is happy to help you figure it out.
2. Make a Quick Inventory List
It doesn’t have to be fancy, just jot down a list of the things you’re planning to store. When months go by and you’re wondering, “Did I put that in storage or is it still in the garage?” you’ll be glad you did.
3. Gather Your Packing Supplies
Grab some sturdy boxes (bonus points if they’re all similar sizes for stacking), a few plastic bins for anything sensitive to moisture, packing tape, bubble wrap or paper, and a good marker. Don’t forget labels, they’re a game-changer when you need to find something later.
4. Clean Your Stuff First
Before you store anything, give it a quick clean. Wipe down furniture, empty and dry appliances, and throw covers or sheets over bigger items to keep the dust off. A little effort now keeps your stuff in better shape long-term.
5. Label Everything (Seriously)
Label at least two sides of every box so you don’t have to dig later. Even just writing “Kitchen – pans & bowls” can save you from tearing through five mystery boxes.
6. Think Through the Layout
When you’re loading your unit, put heavier items on the bottom and towards the back. Keep stuff you might need soon, like holiday decor or seasonal clothes, near the front. If you can, leave a little walking path down the middle.
